Daily Mail – Daily Bile

Nick Clegg got it absolutely right. The Daily Mail and its sister paper, The Mail on Sunday, regularly spews forth bucket loads of bile against anyone and everyone that dares challenge the iniquitous status quo in this country or anywhere on the planet for that matter. Complete with its history of fascist support, The Mail is contorted by its hatred of all things progressive and humane. It feeds, like a drug pusher, the fears and insecurities of middle England, creating a fictitious England of old, a fiction that could not be further from the truth. The real history of England is one of overbearing class privilege matched by generations of stunted, unfulfilled lives, all wrapped up in a cruel imperial grandeur.

It was this deeply ingrained inequality that Ralph Miliband was at pains to address. Ralph Miliband hated inequality and it is the Daily Mail, under Lord Rothermere’s tax avoiding ownership and Paul Dacre’s bullying editorship, that hates those who fight for a more egalitarian society. It is good that the thoroughly reactionary Daily Mail hates Ralph Miliband because it indicates that Ralph Miliband’s analysis of British capitalism is still spot on.

What was England like in the days of old? Firstly it grew rich on the back of the triangular trade, a despicable trade that dealt principally with enslaved Africans and the cash crops they were forced to cultivate. Secondly it was a society that cruelly exploited child labour; down the mines, in the factories and in the poor house. Children were routinely worked to death so that British capitalism might remain profitable. Thirdly, England as the principal country of Great Britain, was at the heart of a viscous global empire, one that wiped out indigenous peoples without a blink of the eye. Those that opposed British imperial conquest were simply eliminated. Even after the conclusion of the Second World War, a war supposedly fought for democracy, Great Britain sought to impose its will by the most extreme brutality, witness the concentration camps in Kenya, Malaya and even in the North of Ireland. Ralph Miliband devoted his life to exposing all this brutality and the Daily Mail hates him for it.

One of the unexpected by-products of the British Empire was the arrival of economic migrants seeking to improve their life chances. The Daily Mail hates these people with a xenophobic, toxic passion.

In response to the dire living standards of the majority of English people in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, trades unions were formed. The Daily Mail hates these organisations with a blind, class driven passion.

To give a political voice to the working people of Britain, the Labour Party was formed. The Daily Mail despises this party with a viscous, ideologically irrational passion.

Working women were doubly oppressed, both as workers and as women. They fought and continue to fight for equality in all fields of endeavour. The Daily Mail vilifies these feminists for undermining their ruling patriarchal supremacy.

Radicals and Socialists like Ralph Miliband have, throughout the ages, fought in a thousand ways to better the lot of humanity. Despite errors and even lapses into criminality, this socialist pulse remains undimmed. Today it is typified by the Occupy Movement. The Daily Mail hates these brave humanists with a poisoned passion.

Every page of The Mail comes dripping with this ruling class poison but it comes cleverly masquerading as the legitimate voice of Middle England. Rupert Murdoch’s tabloids play exactly the same game only they pretend to be the legitimate voice of Britain’s working class. The reality could not be further from the truth. All the Tory Press, tabloids and Broadsheets are the mouthpiece of corporate Britain. They have privatised the electricity and gas supplies, the airports and the public transport systems, and if they get their way, our schools and hospitals. They have even privatised the water we drink. Their rationale is simple and determined; maximisation of profit and to hell with society at large. Ralph Miliband spent his life scientifically explaining all this and the Daily Mail continues to hate him even while he lies in his grave.
